Video from both the Chamber of Commerce and WSRE mayoral candidate forums is up and online. Both forums featured all four mayoral candidates.

Our thanks to WUWF for videotaping the Chamber forum and hosting the video on their site. We can’t embed the video here, but it is available on WUWF’s site in two parts: Part 1 and Part 2.

House candidate caught removing opponent’s signs

Greg Brown, a Republican candidate for the District 1 Florida House seat, has been caught on video removing opponent Doug Broxson’s campaign signs late at night.

According to blog The Third Report, the Broxson campaign was concerned about the frequent disappearance of their signs and decided to set up a remote surveillance camera. By chance, Mr. Brown and his wife showed up and began removing Broxson signs while Broxson staffers were secluded behind a bush setting up the camera…

Video: Mayoral candidates at East Hill forum

Below are some video clips from the mayoral candidates’ forum in East Hill a few weeks ago, courtesy of the Charles Bare campaign.

In the coming weeks, at least two mayoral candidates forums will be held. On July 20, Escambia County Democrats will host the candidates at Franco’s on Gregory Street; and on July 27, the Chamber of Commerce will host a forum at New World Landing. The “Coffee Party” will also host two mayoral events at the Downtown Library: the first, on July 12…

Anderson Cooper on new oil restrictions

CNN’s Anderson Cooper was outspoken last week on new Coast Guard rules that require journalists, photographers, and anyone else to stay at least 65 feet away from certain oil response efforts.

The new rules create a 65-foot “safety zone” around response vessels and oil boom. Those who violate the safety zone could be charged with a Class D felony and fined up to $40,000.

Mr. Cooper dedicated his opening segment last Thursday to pointing out…

Councilman Johnson on Hardball

Pensacola City Councilman Larry B. Johnson appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews yesterday afternoon.

Matthews: Larry Johnson’s a councilman down in Pensacola, sir, thank you very much. What is your reaction on hearing the president say that he’s got a $20 billion commitment up front in an escrow account for BP to pay those hurt by this spill?

Johnson: Chris, I think that’s a step in the right direction…

President Obama’s national address

Below is video of President Obama’s address to the nation from the Oval Office earlier this evening.

The initial reaction from pundits and internet commentators seems negative. I’ve read and heard the speech described as a “missed opportunity.” Sure, the speech could have used more detail. Overall, though, I thought it was a pretty solid address. It was a strongly-worded rebuke of that which got us in this boat, to include BP’s recklessness, lack of regulation and oversight, and America’s dependence…

Videos: BPF interviews mayoral candidates

Last week former mayor and executive director of Better Pensacola Forum Jerry Margarden interviewed the five mayoral candidates for BPF’s BLAB TV show.

The video is online at http://www.blabtvshows.com/?v=mayorcandidates.

Many of the questions focused on economic and public safety issues. Some of the candidates didn’t offer a lot of specifics, but there are a few moments of frankness and clarity throughout…

Bare releases oil spill video

Mayoral candidate Charles Bare has released a video which he terms an “assessment of oil damage at Pensacola Beach.”

“Hi, my name is Charles Bare and I’m a candidate for mayor of the City of Pensacola. As you can see, it’s a very, very hot day out here at Pensacola Beach. I came out to get a first-hand glimpse of what is happening on our beach, and what the impact of the oil spill has been, and I see a lot of people out here enjoying the sun, but I also see a lot of smaller tar balls — penny, nickel, quarter-sized…

Wiggins’ media adventures

As Mayor of Pensacola, Mike Wiggins has had the opportunity to do a ton of media interviews over the past week. Here are several of them. Mayor Wiggin’s key point seems to be that Pensacola and Pensacola Beach are “open for business.” Not a lot of anger toward BP. Promoting tourism at this tough time is important — crucially important — but we need more than a cheerleader right now. We need someone out there holding BP accountable. Mayor Wiggins should be telling the media that BP isn’t doing their best here, that the cleanup crews are not good enough…

Hayward releases video on oil spill

Pensacola mayoral candidate Ashton Hayward has released a new web video on the BP oil spill:

“Like many of you, I grew up here; playing on our beaches, fishing in our bays, and eating great seafood. But now, that life is threatened, and I’m concerned about the future of our city, and our region. Some politicians think that everything will be okay, or that we can trust big oil companies to clean up their mess.

I wasn’t born yesterday and neither were you…

Highlight from the tree ordinance debate

We’ve been meaning to put this up for a while, but have gotten sidetracked. It’s a highlight from last month’s debate about the City’s tree ordinance.

In it, Judy Gund of accounting firm Saltmarsh, Cleaveland & Gund comes before the City Council to stand up for big business and big development, and to call out Council members Diane Mack and Larry B. Johnson for putting forth the crazy idea that big business and big development should follow the same rules as everyone else…

Pensacola Mad Men video

Pensacola ad man Joe Vinson has put together a terrific little video for the Pensacola Bay Area Advertising Federation’s 2009 Addy Awards. The video is adapted from the intro to AMC’s Mad Men, a television series about the advertising industry on Madison Avenue in the 1950s.

If you look closely enough, you’ll notice the San Carlos Hotel, the Blount Building, and Seville Tower (the American National Bank Building), as well as lot of great old ads for Vince Whibbs, the Tiki House, Gulf Power, Spearman Brewing Company, Fisher-Brown Insurance Company, the Casino, Oscar’s, among others!

The Cronley theatrics

Jim Cronley spoke against the MacQueen airport deal at Council last Thursday, and threw in a little showmanship: A transcript: I’ve got a short statement about the lease, but before that I’ve got a confession to make.  Last Tuesday, I got a phone call from somebody that I knew, that said there is more than [...]

“His Choice”

This is maybe my favourite political ad of the whole cycle: It’s simple as can be, and to the point.  No audio, just music, and John McCain’s own words laid onto the screen.  Two quotes where he admits he simply doesn’t know that much about the economy, that he has a lot to learn, and [...]

Cannada-Wynn and Coby on the de Luna monument

I thought this exchange between Pensacola City Councilwoman Jewel Cannada-Wynn and City Manager Al Coby was funny, and an indicator of why too many things are the way that they are. Sharon Barnett’s comments on CMPA issue

While I’m talking about last week’s City Council meeting, I thought I’d share attorney Sharon Barnett’s comments regarding the CMPA Sunshine violations issue: My favourite part: Mr. Mayor, this is a clear violation of the Sunshine law. This is a not-for-profit private entity that is acting for a public agency … It is covered by [...]

Council rudeness to citizens needs to stop

It’s gotten better over the last year or two but citizens who speak before the Pensacola City Council are still occasionally spoken down to, belittled, or berated, and that needs to stop. Regardless of my respect for him otherwise, the chief (but not only) culprit is Mayor John Fogg. I’ve lost count of how many [...]

Saturday’s John Lewis speech on video

The excellent Pensacola Beach Blog has pointed out that someone was kind enough to videotape Congressman John Lewis’ speech at the grand opening of the Obama campaign’s Pensacola headquarters this past Saturday. Congresswoman Tubbs Jones dies

Congresswoman from Ohio Stephanie Tubbs Jones has died after suffering an aneurysm. Tubbs Jones was genuine, passionate, and outspoken, and she wasn’t beholden to anyone other than the people she served in Ohio’s eleventh Congressional district. She was one of the good guys. Here’s one of my favourite Tubbs Jones moments:
