Firefighters endorse Hayward

The Pensacola Professional Fire Fighters I.A.F.F. Local 707 has endorsed Ashton Hayward for Mayor of Pensacola.

Local 707 represents members of the Pensacola Fire Department. The union held a candidates’ forum and members met individually with candidates prior to making an endorsement.

“I’m very proud that after interviewing all the candidates for mayor, they chose to support me,” Mr. Hayward said. “Our citizens’ safety…”

Mayoral candidate Charles Bare recently joined members of the Pensacola Police and Fire departments for a first-hand look at theCity’s public safety services, pledging afterward that as mayor he would spending shifts with PPD and PFD members a “regular part of [his] job.”

Last week, Mr. Bare rode with PPD officers for a 12-hour shift, riding along with three different officers in different parts of the City. He said that after spending a shift with PPD officers, he said, “I have a better understanding…

Round-up, 11.19.09

A few items that we wanted to highlight today:

IN sits down with Aronberg and Gelber. The Independent News sat down with State Sens. Dave Aronberg and Dan Gelber, Democratic candidates for Florida Attorney General, both of whom were in Pensacola last week for a candidate forum at Washington High School. Both candidates are incredibly impressive. Senator Aronberg in particular, though, has been to the Pensacola area several times over the last few years and is remarkably on top of the issues…

City has $275K budget hole for FY2009

The City’s retirement funds for both the police and fire departments receive annual contributions from the State’s Department of Retirement. Unfortunately, contributions to both funds decreased significantly this year, for a total decrease of $404,475.58. City staff did foresee a decrease and budgeted accordingly, but the decrease was larger than expected. This leaves a budget hole of approximately $275,000 for FY2009 (which ends September 30). Staff is presently preparing recommendations for how to address the shortfall…

Round-up, 08.13.09

A few items I wanted to highlight today:

County Attorney proposes technology rules. County Attorney Allison Rogers has proposed that the County Commission adopt a policy banning the use of cellphones, Blackberries, PDAs, or laptops by commissioners during meetings. The policy would also prohibit commissioners from blogging or using social networking sites like Facebook in relation to County business. Jamie Page of the News Journal is reporting that Commissioners Wilson Robertson, Marie Young, and Kevin White have already…

Edwards to become County fire chief

Fire Chief Frank Edwards will leave the City of Pensacola’s fire department to head Escambia County’s fire-rescue operations and public safety bureau. His last day with the City will be July 31.

Pensacola City Manager Al Coby says the position will be advertised nationally. Mr. Coby has not yet made a decision on an interim replacement.

Mr. Edwards had been the Chief of the Pensacola Fire Department since December 2007. He previously spent 28 years with the Chesterfield, Virginia fire department…

Automatic Aid to remain suspended through April

Pensacola City Manager Al Coby says that he does not anticipate bringing Automatic Aid back to City Council “prior to the end of April at the earliest” — and that the pilot program which had been scheduled to begin March 2 will remain suspended until Council takes further action.

Meanwhile, word on the street is that a particular Council member is working with several County Commissioners to restructure the Automatic Aid Agreement to be more favourable to the City; among the possibilities being discussed are the placement of County firefighters in City fire stations…

Mack: Concerned citizens are “drop in the bucket”

Pensacola City Councilwoman Diane Mack is continuing her unfortunate defense of the Automatic Aid Agreement — and continuing to dismiss the concerns of her constituents.

In an update to her website, Councilwoman Mack called concerned citizens a “drop in the bucket”:

“If Council members received an average of 20 to 30 communications and all were in opposition as they reported, that’s 200 to 300 citizens. There are 53,000 City of Pensacola residents and about 35,000 registered voters; any way you do the math, the opposition was a drop in the bucket.”

Mack pushes Automatic Aid, dismisses citizenry

Pensacola City Councilwoman Diane Mack pushed hard for the Automatic Aid Agreement at yesterday’s joint City/County meeting, attempting several times to dismiss and marginalise the opinions of dissenting citizens. No action was taken at the meeting, however, and the issue will be carried over to a Council Committee of the Whole meeting.

Councilwoman Mack, speaking in favour of moving forward with the agreement, emphasised that this was only a pilot program. Councilwoman Megan Pratt agreed, noting that the “scientist in her” wanted to do an experiment to gather the data…

Alert: Automatic Aid to be discussed

Tomorrow afternoon, the Pensacola City Council and the Board of County Commissioners will meet in a joint session. On the agenda is the Automatic Aid Agreement, which would require the City’s fire department to respond to fires in unincorporated areas of the County. Progressive Pensacola feels that the Automatic Aid Agreement is incredibly inequitable and an affront to City taxpayers. We have voiced our opposition several times, and judging from comments readers have left, many other City residents share our concerns.

Ahead of the meeting, we encourage you to once again email or call members of the City Council…

Automatic Aid Agreement suspended

According to City Manager Al Coby, the implementation of the Automatic Aid Agreement has been suspended pending discussion at the March 17th joint City/County meeting. Ahead of that meeting, it’s important to let our Council members know how City residents feel about County residents receiving our first-class fire service without paying City taxes.

Please, take a moment to email or call one or more members of Council to tell them that you don’t want this, and won’t accept it.

Feel free to use our post “No to the Automatic Aid Agreement” as a starting point…

No to the Automatic Aid Agreement

Tomorrow, March 2, the Pensacola Fire Department will begin a pilot program of the Automatic Aid Agreement.

Under this agreement, the Pensacola Fire Department will respond to fires and other emergencies in the County, just as if those instances were happening within the City limits.

Progressive Pensacola expresses, in the strongest possible terms, our vehement opposition to the Automatic Aid Agreement. Under the agreement, County residents will receive the services of the first-class Pensacola Fire Department — services that City residents pay for with their City taxes…

Yesterday’s City Council committee meetings

Here’s the cliffnotes from yesterday’s City Council committee meetings. Remember that items approved by committees then proceed to the regular Thursday night Council meeting to be approved or disapproved by the full Council.

Committee of the Whole

*Dr. Coy Irvin appeared to thank the City for its help with the Celebrate Pensacola 450th anniversary festivities. Everyone patted one another on the back.
*Staff provided to Council the “initial evaluation” of the CMPA development agreement by Abramson and Associates.

City police and fire should stay in the City

Currently, the City of Pensacola and Escambia County have a mutual agreement to provide police and fire services to each other when requested. For example, if there was a fire in the County, but there was a Pensacola Fire Department station closer to the fire, Escambia County could request that PFD respond, and we typically [...]
