FOP president on police budget cuts. Sunday’s Pensacola News Journal featured a viewpoint from Robert Bell, president of the local lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, the union which represents most Pensacola Police officers. The piece argues that cuts to the police budget have affected and will continue to affect public safety, and explains the union’s recent demonstration at the opening of newly-constructed clay tennis courts at the Roger Scott…

This past Friday, the City of Pensacola held a grand opening for the new Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Community Centre. The facility replaces two community centres destroyed in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan.
We can’t praise the new community centre enough. It is simply gorgeous inside and out. The spacious ballroom and its magnificent view of Pensacola Bay alone are worth the trip. The 17,500 square foot facility was constructed at a cost of $4.4 million…

More on the North Hill vs. AT&T showdown. Rick’s Blog reprints a letter from Scott Davis of the North Hill Preservation Association to Council and City staff. The letter is a well-reasoned, legally-grounded argument for oversight of AT&T utility installations in public rights-of-way.
More on the Plaza Ferdinand VII situation. Our friends at the ultra-conservative loopty blog The Lunch Counter encourage citizens to show up…

Last night, the Pensacola City Council voted to bring back an ordinance proposed at Council’s previous meeting, which would heavily restrict group and event use of Plaza Ferdinand VII. The ordinance was approved by a 7-2 vote, with Council members Cannada-Wynn and Pratt dissenting. The ordinance must still be read and approved a second time before taking effect, which should happen at the Council’s August 13 meeting.
If approved, the ordinance would allow groups of people 29 or fewer to use Plaza Ferdinand VII…

By far the most contentious debate at last night’s meeting of the Pensacola City Council was concerning an ordinance regulating use of Plaza Ferdinand VII. The ordinance would have barred the Winterfest organisation from continuing many of its activities in the Plaza, so they came in force to plead their case, going so far as to bring a costumed Santa Claus whose “helper” attempted to distribute lumps of coal to Council members.
The proposed ordinance was developed in response to pending federal litigation against the City. That suit was filed by a church group who was barred…

Pensacola City Councilwoman Megan Pratt has provided on her blog an update on her efforts to pursue a “natural playground” at the Bryan Park site surrounding the new Tryon Branch Library. She and Parks & Recreation Staff met with Mr. Ron King of Natural Playgrounds Company, and apparently had some good discussions:
“The original plans had a walking trail around the park, and the current plan is for that to stay, with major play elements in the center as well as some scattered around the park. Mr. King was particularly conscious of the fact that this is a park around a library, noting the potential for outdoor…”

Last night, Mayor Wiggins presented Sam’s Club with the Mayor’s Beautification Award, in recognition of their work to improve Springdale Park, which is located on Brent Lane between Lynell Street and Evergreen Road. They deserve it. They’ve donated money and loads of volunteer time to revitalise that park, which was… somewhat lacking before Sam’s Club took it up as a pet project.
The Sam’s Club representative who accepted the award also presented the City’s Parks & Recreation Department with a further $10,000 donation, and announced that Sam’s Club would also begin working at Corrine Jones Park…
