Cannada-Wynn takes Reeves money

City Councilwoman Jewel Cannada-Wynn accepted $750 in contributions from three companies controlled by IPC honcho Jim Reeves.

Councilwoman Cannada-Wynn faces a tough challenge from architect Brian Spencer. She raised $2,251 in the F2 reporting period, which covers July 17-30. Mr. Spencer has not yet filed his F2 report, but he did report $2,850 in contributions on his F1 report filed last month.

Mr. Reeves is a founding member of the…

McCollum fundraising at Benson home

Have $500? Want to meet Florida Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum and rub elbows with Pensacola elites like Jim “Big Stuff” Reeves and lackey Danny Zimmern?

If so, then you’ll want to attend the McCollum for Governor fundraiser set for Wednesday night at the Aragon home of Scott and Lois Benson.

The Bensons are parents to Pensacola City Councilwoman Megan Pratt and former State Rep. and current Attorney General candidate…

Grover’s big night at the IPC

Last night, Escambia County Commission chairman Grover Robinson IV was inducted into the Irish Politicians Club in a well-attended ceremony.

Notable attendees included our mayor, Mike Wiggins, as well as District 2 City Councilman Sam Hall, who has repeatedly insisted he is not an IPC member.

One IPC member showed up with a blown-up print of a recent cartoon by the PNJ’s Andy Marlette, which portrayed IPC ringleader Jim Reeves…

Grover to join IPC

Word on the street is that Escambia County Commissioner Grover Robinson IV will be inducted into Jim Reeves’ Irish Politicians Club at the end of the month.

Congratulations, Commissioner Robinson! You’ve made it to the big time!

With Mr. Robinson holding the chairmanship of the County Commission, what does his induction gain IPC chief Jim Reeves?

Change will come to City Hall

We are, of course, disappointed in the six City Council members who backed good old boy Jim Reeves yesterday.

Mayor Wiggins and Councilwoman Pratt can speak as disingenuously as they like. The residents of Pensacola aren’t stupid. They know, for example, that Mayor Wiggins is a member of Reeves’ Irish Politicians Club. They know that Dick Baker, one of the CMPA members who nominated Mr. Reeves, is Mayor Wiggins’ campaign treasurer. They know that besides being neighbours…

Reeves appointment stands

The appointment of Jim Reeves to the Community Maritime Park Associates (CMPA) will stand, as a motion to remove him made at today’s Committee of the Whole meeting failed on a 4-6 vote.

Opposing Mr. Reeves’ appointment were Council members DeWeese, Johnson, Jerralds, and Mack. Supporting Mr. Reeves were Mayor Mike Wiggins and Council members Wu, Hall, Cannada-Wynn, Townsend, and Pratt.

Progressive Pensacola will have more…

Reeves just making stuff up now

With his back against the wall and apparently stripped of reasonable arguments, Jim Reeves has resorted to making things up about the City Council members who oppose his recent controversial appointment to the Community Maritime Park Board of Trustees.

In an article in today’s News Journal, Jamie Page quotes Mr. Reeves as saying that Councilman Larry B. Johnson opposes his appointment because — get this — he won’t let Mr. Johnson into his invitation-only Irish Politicians Club…

Reeves should resign CMPA seat

The debate and controversy that has arisen from the appointment of developer/attorney/schemer Jim Reeves to the Community Maritime Park Associates (CMPA) Board is illustrative of just how divisive and controversial a figure Mr. Reeves is. He’s an incredibly poor choice to serve on the board managing the already divisive and controversial Maritime Park project.

For decades, Mr. Reeves, founder of the infamous Irish Politicians Club, has sought to exert an undue influence on government…

The coming week in City government

Tell Council members: Stop backing good old boys

Last week, the Pensacola City Council passed a resolution making the Community Maritime Park Associates (CMPA) an “instrumentality” of the City and assuming the power to appoint and remove all 12 members of the CMPA Board of Trustees. The long-overdue move was necessary due to the financial structure of the project. In the past, the City Council has only appointed one-fourth of the CMPA Board’s membership.

The next day, the CMPA Board of Trustees intentionally evaded the City Council’s…

Reeves discussion stifled

Attempts by Pensacola City Council members to discuss the controversial appointment of Jim Reeves to the CMPA was stifled at this afternoon’s joint meeting of the Council and CMPA. Mayor Mike Wiggins, aware that Council members would try to raise the topic, said in his opening remarks that such discussion was not permitted as the issue was not on the agenda.

City Attorney Rusty Wells was consulted, who said that it was the mayor’s prerogative as chair, but that Council could overrule him…

Wiggins OK with Reeves appointment

Progressive Pensacola spoke with Mayor Mike Wiggins this morning about the appointment of Jim Reeves to the CMPA this past Friday and the fact that the appointment won’t come back for City Council, as intended.

“Well, I think the first thing you’ve got to look at is whether or not it’s legal,” said Mayor Wiggins. “I’ve spoken to the City Attorney, and his opinion is that it is legal. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really have a problem with this. It seems to me like it was sort of a timing issue. Jim Reeves is, quite frankly…

Reeves subverting Council

After being appointed by the CMPA this afternoon, Jim Reeves immediately sat down and assumed the role of a CMPA board member and began voting on items. This contradicts the resolution adopted by the City Council last night, which intended for the CMPA’s appointment today to not take effect until it had been approved by the Council.

Mr. Reeves argued that he was now an incumbent and did not need approval. However, the resolution took effect immediately upon its adoption last night. He was not an incumbent at the time…

CMPA selects Jim Reeves

We regret to report that the Community Maritime Park Associates has selected Jim Reeves as its newest member.

We’re disappointed, to say the least, but the battle’s not lost yet. The appointment must still be approved by the City Council at its next round of meetings the week after next. As we reported yesterday, we’ve spoken to at least one Council member who plans to oppose Mr. Reeves’ appointment.

We’ll have more on this next week.

Jim Reeves on CMPA? No thanks!

As some of you may know, the always-lurking Jim Reeves is a nominee to fill Judge Lacey Collier’s recently-vacated seat on the Community Maritime Park Associates (CMPA) Board of Trustees. That’s right, the same Jim Reeves that completely botched the Hawkshaw Eastside and Avalex deals and promised “affordable” housing in the Aragon project wants to help manage our waterfront park development. No thanks!

Mr. Reeves, the former state legislator, City Council member, and founder of…
