Page lists potential mayoral candidates. Jamie Page of the Pensacola News Journal lists the names he’s heard mentioned as possible mayoral candidates. No surprises except for Kenneth E. Lamb, the owner of CyberSmart Computers and WEBY radio personality, who at least as of 2008 did not live within the City limits.

IN sits down with Aronberg and Gelber. The Independent News sat down with State Sens. Dave Aronberg and Dan Gelber, Democratic candidates for Florida Attorney General, both of whom were in Pensacola last week for a candidate forum at Washington High School. Both candidates are incredibly impressive. Senator Aronberg in particular, though, has been to the Pensacola area several times over the last few years and is remarkably on top of the issues…

Rep. Miller calls healthcare bill “terrible legislation.” Congressman Jeff Miller of Florida’s first Congressional district, which includes Pensacola, wrote in his periodic newsletter that he “voted against the terrible piece of legislation [HR 3962] and will continue to fight against a massive government takeover of our health care system.” No surprise here from Jeff Miller, who could care less that polls show a majority of Americans…

Last week’s Independent News cover story dealt with recent youth-driven protests over the death of 17-year old Victor Steen and the unresponsiveness of the Pensacola Police Department and City government, and with the wider issue of youth advocacy and involvement in government.

Tragic event involving PPD officer. As many readers likely know, Pensacola Police officer Jerald Ard, 35, struck and killed a bicyclist with his police cruiser early Saturday morning in Brownsville. Officer Ard was pursuing the individual when, according to the Department, the man “crashed his bicycle and fell into the path of Ard’s vehicle.” Officer Ard, a four-year veteran of the Department, has been placed on administrative leave…

Ray Sansom court hearing coverage. The St. Petersburg Times liveblogged yesterday’s court hearing in the Ray Sansom case. Rep. Sansom, the disgraced former Florida House speaker, faces charges of official misconduct and perjury. Both his attorney and the attorney for Sansom contributor and cohort Jay Odom were in court yesterday to argue that charges be dropped. Hancock Bank is requesting a zoning change from ATZ-1 to ATZ-2 to allow for retail and service commercial uses on the remainder of its property at 4980 North 12th Avenue (12th and Summit Boulevard).
