60K enjoy Mardi Gras parade

According to the Pensacola News Journal, the Pensacola Police Department estimates around 60,000 people attended Saturday’s Pensacola Grand Mardi Gras Parade.

Those who saw Palafox Street littered with beads, trinkets, candy wrappers, and other refuse in the parade’s immediate aftermath should be happy to know that just a short time later, the street looked as if nothing ever happened. Our thanks to the City’s Public Works Department and others who helped to stage and clean up the parade.

On Veteran’s Day

On this November 11, we give thanks to all of America’s military veterans. We’ve read many tributes, from both local and national outlets. Tributes are nice. Parades are nice.

What isn’t nice, though — in fact, what is unconsionable — is the fact that we aren’t taking proper care of our veterans. So many of them lack food, shelter, and adequate health care. The Veterans’ Administration estimates that on any given night, more than 131,000 veterans…

My Saturday in downtown Pensacola

I started off the day at the Palafox Market, which takes place each Saturday morning from May through September. The market, which started last year, seems to get better each week. This week I saw strawberries, blueberries, squash, snap peas, potatoes, crowder peas, onions, jalapeños, herbs, and more, all locally grown. I took home a nice haul and can attest to the fact that it’s all been delicious. Local farmers markets are win-win. They provide you great food, that’s fresher than grocery store produce because it hasn’t been shipped cross-country before it gets to you. Your patronage supports local farmers and, in turn…
