Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan will host a “town hall” meeting Thursday, September 3 (tomorrow) evening, beginning at 5:30 PM. The meeting will be held at Warrington Presbyterian Church, located at 406 South Navy Boulevard.
The meeting is intended specifically to give Warrington residents the opportunity to meet with the sheriff and share any concerns they may have, but all citizens are welcome.

A few items I wanted to highlight today:
Sheriff to send letters for prostitution offences. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office plans to start sending a letter to owners of vehicles used in prostitution offences. The letter preaches about sexually transmitted diseases and threatens (apparently without much legal foundation) to seize vehicles involved in prostitution offences, which are misdemeanors. These letters are a really bad, really stupid idea.
County Commissioners blew $6,220 on resort trip…

New Sheriff David Morgan will reopen the Ensley precinct closed last year by former Sheriff Ron McNesby. The precinct, located at 97 West Hood Drive, will be refurbished, and reopen in about 12 weeks, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Ted Roy.
The Ensley precinct was closed along with a precinct in Warrington last year in what Mr. McNesby called a “cost-cutting move.” He estimated that the closures would save the Sheriff’s Office about $250,000 annually…

A few items I want to highlight today:
Pensacola News Journal:
“Public defender cleans house”
Public Defender James Owens, who took office this morning, has fired thirteen employees from the office’s Pensacola division.
“I was told when I became public defender, don’t make any waves, don’t let anyone go, keep the status quo and you won’t have an opponent in four years. My plan is with my platform. We’ve got to restructure our office,” said Owens.

At this hour David Morgan has been sworn in as Escambia County Sheriff; a ceremony was held this morning at 9:00 AM in the chambers of the Escambia County Commission.
James Owens has also taken office as the Public Defender of the First Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Mr. Owens, of course, replaces Jack Behr, who has served since 1976; Mr. Owens is widely expected to make sweeping changes to the public defender’s office, including possible layoffs.

This evening’s Pensacola City Council meeting was pretty uneventful. Four of our ten Council members — Nobles, DeSorbo, Wu, and Wiggins — didn’t even bother to show up. However, a citizen did speak in open forum and raised an interesting issue. Last year, on September 21, 2007, Escambia County Sheriff (and candidate for reelection to [...]

For those of you who do not know, Ron McNesby decided last month to close the ECSO precincts in Warrington and Ensley – two areas where the crime certainly merits having precincts – to save $38,000. The depth of the corruption, mismanagement, and waste in the ECSO would make such a move laughable if it [...]
