Council appointments

Last week, I ran through the nominations for the various boards and commissions to which the Pensacola City Council appoints its members. Here are the final appointments:

* Arts Council of NWF: Megan B. Pratt
* Bay Area Resource Council: Larry B. Johnson
* Celebrate Pensacola: Ronald P. Townsend
* Community Action Program Committee: John Jerralds
* Community Drug & Alcohol Commission: Jewel Cannada-Wynn

Endorsement: Larry B. Johnson

Progressive Pensacola would like to reiterate its prior endorsement of Larry B. Johnson for Pensacola City Council, District 4.
We do so with no ill will toward his opponent, incumbent Marty Donovan.  Regardless of any specific policy agreements we may have with Mr. Donovan, the fact of the matter is that he is simply too negative.  [...]

Endorsement: C. J. Lewis

Progressive Pensacola endorses Christopher “C. J.” Lewis for Mayor of Pensacola.
We could present a glowing piece about Lewis, his great common-sense ideas, his refreshingly strategic way of analysing our City’s problems; but, as is usually the case with Lewis, he does a better job of saying it himself.  Go to his website.  Seriously.  Read it. [...]

Endorsement: Megan Benson Pratt

Progressive Pensacola endorses Megan Benson Pratt for Pensacola City Council, District 9 (At-Large).
Pratt, 35, is one of the few young professionals with enough financial and personal stability to run for Council, which is low-paying and currently dominated by retirees. Pensacola, quite frankly, is lucky to have Pratt. A Harvard graduate with both masters and [...]

Endorsement: Diane Mack

Progressive Pensacola endorses Diane Mack for Pensacola City Council, District 8 (At-Large).
In a year with the unprecedented possibility of change in City government, Diane Mack is perhaps the single most important one to elect.
Mack, 61, is a small business owner who in recent years has taken an interest in the City budget, forming the Pensacola [...]

Endorsement: Tony Henderson

Progressive Pensacola endorses Democrat Tony Henderson for Public Defender, First Judicial Circuit of Florida.
To be quite honest, either Henderson and his Republican opponent, James Owens, would make an excellent Public Defender. Truth is, they’re friends. They played high school football together. Henderson was the best man at Owens’ wedding. [...]

Endorsement: Larry B. Johnson

Progressive Pensacola endorses Larry B. Johnson for Pensacola City Council, District 4.
Mr. Johnson, 51, is an area businessman and community activist perhaps best known for his involvement with the environmental group Emerald Coastkeeper. He’s been a longtime advocate for environmental issues, and recognises that in order to attract and retain businesses and new residents, [...]

Endorsement: Maren DeWeese

Progressive Pensacola endorses Maren DeWeese for Pensacola City Council, District 3.
DeWeese, 40, is a former mortgage lender that has been a stay-at-home mom since 2002.  The bottom line: DeWeese is smart, and her experience with financial analysis could be a great asset considering the dire financial straits in which our City government finds itself.
Furthermore, DeWeese [...]

Endorsement: Sam Hall

Progressive Pensacola endorses Sam Hall for Pensacola City Council, District 2.
Put very simply, Councilman Hall is the one incumbent we need to keep.
Councilman Hall is a voice for change, and the first such voice Council has seen in a long while. Since his ascension to Council two years ago, Hall has brought countless things [...]

Endorsement: PCC-1

Progressive Pensacola declines to make an endorsement in the race for Pensacola City Council, District 1.
Neither the incumbent, P. C. Wu, or his challenger, Bob Walker, strike us as particularly progressive voices. Wu has demonstrated in his two terms that he is either quite content with the status quo or not talented enough to [...]

Endorsement: No on 2

Progressive Pensacola urges voters to vote NO on Amendment 2, also known as the “Florida Marriage Protection Amendment”, on the general election ballot.
The text of the proposed amendment:
Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or [...]

Colin Powell endorses Barack Obama

Colin Powell, retired general, and former Secretary of State under the Bush Administration, has just endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president on Meet the Press.
His endorsement was eloquent and humble. According to Powell, Obama “has both the style and substance to be an exceptional President.”  He ended by stating simply, “I’ll be voting for [...]

PNJ endorses the status quo

Today’s Pensacola News Journal asks, “Do voters want change? City races offer plenty.”  Then, the PNJ proceeds to endorse a slate of incumbents.
The Pensacola News Journal is afraid to buck the establishment and support progressive voices for change in our City.  Luckily, I don’t think the voters will have as hard a time doing so.
PNJ [...]

Endorsement: Jim Bryan

Progressive Pensacola endorses Democrat Jim Bryan for U.S. Congress for the First District of Florida.
I’ll preface this by saying that Bryan, a political newcomer, is poorly financed — the Republican incumbent, Jeff Miller, has what can only be described as a massive cash advantage. That said, elections aren’t always about money, and everything else [...]

Upcoming predictions and endorsements

As we roll out some predictions and endorsements over the next two weeks, I want to restate what I said before the primary.
Our endorsements are worth just about as much as those of the PNJ or Independent News — not much. They mean basically this: “I think this candidate is better suited for the job, [...]

More PNJ coverage, endorsements

First, the PNJ has an article up covering the race for Pensacola City Council, District 7:

PNJ: “Election ‘08: District 7″

Secondly, the PNJ has their County Commission endorsements up. In District 1, they’re endorsing Wilson Robertson; in District 3, it’s Marie Young; and in District 5, they’re picking Kevin White.
Two incumbents and a former Commissioner. [...]

Police, firefighters make City endorsements

The Fraternal Order of Police Local 71 and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 707, the respective unions for City police officers and firefighters, announced last week their joint endorsements for Pensacola City Council:

PCC-1: P. C. Wu (i)
PCC-2: Sam Hall (i)
PCC-3: Mike DeSorbo (i)
PCC-4: Larry B. Johnson
PCC-6: Jewel Cannada-Wynn
PCC-7: Robbie Andrews
PCC-8 (At-Large): Jack Nobles [...]

Endorsement: Chris Washler

Pensacola Progressive endorses Chris Washler in the Republican primary for Escambia County Commissioner for District 5.
Washler, a successful small business owner, has entered this race with what seems like a genuine desire to work for change. Anyone that’s met him or seen him speak knows that he’s certainly smart, analytical, and goal-oriented. While [...]

Endorsement: Russ Swinney

Pensacola Progressive endorses Russ Swinney in the Democratic primary for Escambia County Commissioner for District 3.
Marie Young is a nice person, and so are all of her opponents, but that’s not what District 3 needs. District 3 needs someone who would be strong on Commission, who wouldn’t have to play catch-up, who couldn’t be [...]

Endorsement: Wilson Robertson

Pensacola Progressive endorses Wilson Robertson in the Republican primary for Escambia County Commissioner for District 1.
We are less than enthusiastic about Robertson, but urge Rebuplicans in District 1 to vote for him. We don’t think he represents any mighty change, but let’s face it — his name isn’t Mike Whitehead. Whitehead and his arrogance, [...]

Endorsement: Claudia Brown-Curry

Pensacola Progressive endorses Claudia Brown-Curry in the Democratic primary for Escambia County Superintendent of Schools.
While we like and respect the two other qualified candidates, Cary Stidham and Myra Simmons, we believe that Brown-Curry is the right choice to lead the Escambia County School District through the years to come.  There is unequivocally no other candidate [...]

Endorsement: David Morgan

Pensacola Progressive endorses David Morgan in the Republican primary for Sheriff of Escambia County.
The bottom line in this race is that incumbent Ron McNesby has got to go.  He’s at best dishonest and deceptive, and at worst crooked and corrupt.  While I prefer the Democratic candidates, Morgan is a solid choice.  He’s smart on his [...]

Endorsement: Greg Fink

Pensacola Progressive endorses Greg Fink in the Republican primary for (and thus the office of) Representative to the Florida House for District 2.
Dave Murzin hasn’t done anything for District 2 in years, and the poor guy doesn’t even really live in District 2 anymore. Greg Fink is a friend, and we’re sometimes at political [...]

Endorsement: Ryan Gilbert

Progressive Pensacola endorses Ryan L. Gilbert in the Republican primary for (and thus the office of) Representative to the Florida House for District 1.
Gilbert is young and untested, but we’re choosing to view that as a strength. The Florida Legislature is dominated by older, wealthy individuals, of which Gilbert is neither. He is [...]

Endorsement: James Owens

Pensacola Progressive endorses James Owens in the Republican primary for Public Defender for the First Judicial Circuit Court of Florida.
We respect Kelly Merritt Richards and her career of service but we feel that she’s just not the right person to lead the Public Defender’s office. Her plans to focus on managerial issues and not handle [...]

Predictions and endorsements week

Anyone that knows me knows that I’m excited as can be, because it’s eight days until an election, and I love elections.
This week Pensacola Progressive will feature our predictions for the upcoming August 26 primary. We’ll also make a few endorsements. Our endorsements are worth just about as much as the PNJ editorial [...]
