Progressive Pensacola extends birthday wishes to Florida’s next governor, Alex Sink.
Ms. Sink is presently Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and is the likely Democratic nominee for Governor in 2010. She has served as Florida’s CFO since 2006; prior to that, she served as president of Florida operations for Bank of America.
We look forward to watching the campaign unfold between Ms. Sink and the likely Republican nominee, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, who is a doofus.

This morning, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R) kicked off his campaign to replace Charlie Crist as Florida’s governor. With the likely withdrawal of Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson as a potential candidate, Mr. McCollum looks likely to be the leading, if not unopposed, candidate for the Republican nomination.
Bill McCollum is what I would call a “supergoober.” A lifelong politician, Mr. McCollum spent 20 years in Congress advocating 12-year term limits. When left Congress, he became a lobbyist and a failed candidate for U.S. Senate in 2000 and 2004…

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is widely expected to announce Tuesday his intent to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez.
The Associated Press first reported on the impeding announcement last night. The St. Petersburg Times political blog The Buzz spoke to Republican Party of Florida chair Jim Greer, who corroborated the story:
“Charlie Crist is going to be the next U.S. senator from Florida … It’s my opinion he has come to the conclusion that he needs to fight for Floridians…”

All indications are that Florida Governor Charlie Crist will run for U.S. Senate. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune outlines the game of musical chairs that would likely ensue:
“Instead, with Gov. Charlie Crist now an all-but-confirmed candidate for Senate, the quickly developing race is for governor.
At least six Republicans and the fastest rising star in the state Democratic Party are now either running for governor or headed in that direction if Crist announces he will seek Mel Martinez’s vacant Senate seat next year…”

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek has started the year off strong, raising $1.5 million in the first quarter. His biggest adversary on the Democratic side, State Senator Dan Gelber, took in around $400,000. Mr. Gelber’s campaign attributes that to the fact that Mr. Gelber has been preoccupied with the legislative session.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican, hasn’t decided whether or not he’ll jump into the Senate race. If he does, he’ll be awfully tough to beat, regardless of who the Democratic nominee is. Governor Crist’s approval ratings are impressive, rarely dipping below 65 percent…

Florida CFO Alex Sink has announced that she will not seek Florida’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2010.
This is good news from my point of view. For one, I prefer Democratic Congressman Kendrick Meek for the Senate seat. Sink has her heart set on the governorship, anyway — and with her management background, that’s really where she’d be best suited. Sink will run for re-election as CFO in 2010, and barring the earth being taken over by aliens, she’ll run for governor when Crist is term-limited out in 2014.
Meek is thus far the only announced candidate. Former Speaker of the Florida House, Marco Rubio, a Republican, is an unannounced but likely candidate…

Politico is reporting that Florida CFO Alex Sink will not run for either the governorship or the U.S. Senate, and instead will opt to seek a second term as CFO. Sink has for some time been the most widely discussed Democratic candidate for either race, and if she chose to run for either, would almost [...]
