Statewide races, amendments polled

A new poll of second-tier statewide races shows many voters have yet to choose a candidate.

The Mason-Dixon poll shows that 73% of Democratic primary voters have yet to choose between Attorney General candidates Dave Aronberg and Dan Gelber. On the Republican side of the Attorney General’s race, 72% of likely primary voters haven’t decided between Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp, Tampa prosecutor Pam Bondi, and former State Rep. Holly Benson of Pensacola…

At a press conference today in downtown Pensacola, Holly Benson announced she would run for Attorney General of Florida. Ms. Benson is a former state legislator from Pensacola who more recently served as Secretary of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration under Governor Charlie Crist.

Ms. Benson is the daughter of ECUA Board member Lois Benson and the sister of Pensacola City Councilwoman Megan Pratt. She will face Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp in the Republican primary.

Kottkamp files for AG

Florida Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp is — inexplicably — running for Florida Attorney General.

Mr. Kottkamp came under heavy criticism earlier this year when it was revealed that he had spent $425,000 of taxpayer money using state planes to travel back and forth between Tallahassee and his home in Fort Myers, and even to take his family on a vacation in St. Augustine. He had a Florida Highway Patrol trooper drive him and his wife to Atlanta, Georgia to attend a birthday party.

The dominoes keep falling

Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s decision to seek election to the U.S. Senate rather than reelection as governor has expectedly transformed Florida’s political landscape, and the dominoes keep falling.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink (D) was the first candidate to enter the race to replace Governor Crist, announcing her campaign earlier this week. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R) is widely expected to announce his campaign Monday at an event in Orlando. Commissioner of Agriculture Charles Bronson is also considering a run…

It’s official: Crist in Senate race

Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced this morning he will not run for reelection as governor and instead will run for Florida’s open U.S. Senate seat. Minutes after his announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed his candidacy, which is another sort-of kick in the knees for the other Republican candidate, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio… not to mention, as others have pointed out, that Governor Crist’s announcement has gotten three straight days of intensive statewide and national media coverage while Mr. Rubio’s got one day of meager statewide coverage…

Crist expected to announce Senate bid

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is widely expected to announce Tuesday his intent to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez.

The Associated Press first reported on the impeding announcement last night. The St. Petersburg Times political blog The Buzz spoke to Republican Party of Florida chair Jim Greer, who corroborated the story:

“Charlie Crist is going to be the next U.S. senator from Florida … It’s my opinion he has come to the conclusion that he needs to fight for Floridians…”

Statewide races update, 04.13.09

All indications are that Florida Governor Charlie Crist will run for U.S. Senate. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune outlines the game of musical chairs that would likely ensue:

“Instead, with Gov. Charlie Crist now an all-but-confirmed candidate for Senate, the quickly developing race is for governor.

At least six Republicans and the fastest rising star in the state Democratic Party are now either running for governor or headed in that direction if Crist announces he will seek Mel Martinez’s vacant Senate seat next year…”

Putnam to run for Ag Commissioner

In a long-expected move, Congressman Adam Putnam has confirmed that he will run for Florida Commissioner of Agriculture in 2010. Congressman Putnam told the Associated Press he will officially file tomorrow.

Mr. Putnam, 34, was elected to Congress from Florida’s 12th congressional district in 2000. From 2006-2008, Congressman Putnam served as Chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-highest leadership position among House Republicans. Prior to his service in Congress, Mr. Putnam served two terms in the Florida State House…

Martinez is out; Senate race wide open

This morning, Republican Senator Mel Martinez announced he would not seek re-election, using the age-old political excuse of wanting to spend more time with his family. Unlike the Sink announcement, this is something I expected. This blows the race wide open.  Republican Attorney General Bill McCollum has already stated his interest in running for the [...]
