The bright new year

What a year.
Politically, I’ve never had so much fun.  Although my candidate didn’t win every race, I think more of them went my way than didn’t.  We have four new faces on the Pensacola City Council.  Three women.  Younger faces.  Councilmen with 15 and 20 year tenures were toppled.  A corrupt, disgraceful, bigot of a [...]

Presidential predictions, 31 October 2008

Every Friday, I have been laying out my prediction as to how I think the presidential race will shake out. This, of course, is the last Friday before the general election.
As most of you know, national popular vote is irrelevant in presidential elections. The presidency is awarded based on votes in the Electoral [...]

WSRE’s Rally 2008 programs are online

For anyone that missed WSRE’s great “Rally 2008″ programs, they’re available in their entirety online.
These programs are an excellent public service put together by WSRE and the League of Women Voters.  They highlight local races and give the candidates a chance to speak to the voters about key issues.
For last Monday’s program, click here.  The [...]

“His Choice”

This is maybe my favourite political ad of the whole cycle:

It’s simple as can be, and to the point.  No audio, just music, and John McCain’s own words laid onto the screen.  Two quotes where he admits he simply doesn’t know that much about the economy, that he has a lot to learn, and then [...]

Framing the presidential race

Barack Obama is an amazing speaker.  His speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention floored me, almost singlehandedly revived in me the hope for a better future for our country.
Second in my heart to that speech is the speech that he gave after winning the South Carolina primary in late January of this year.  In [...]

Early voting hours extended

By now, I’m sure most if not all of you have heard that Florida’s Republican governor, Charlie Crist, has issued an executive order extending early voting hours throughout the remainder of the early voting period.
Whereas on weekdays early voting previously ran 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, it will now run 7:00 AM-7:00 PM every day through Saturday, [...]

Colin Powell endorses Barack Obama

Colin Powell, retired general, and former Secretary of State under the Bush Administration, has just endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president on Meet the Press.
His endorsement was eloquent and humble. According to Powell, Obama “has both the style and substance to be an exceptional President.”  He ended by stating simply, “I’ll be voting for [...]

SUSA has McCain +2 in Florida

Wow. Here’s the reason that no one should be calling this race with 18 days to go:
…In Florida today, 10/17/08, absentee balloting underway and early voting about to begin, Republican John McCain edges Democrat Barack Obama 49% to 47%, according to a SurveyUSA poll.
SurveyUSA, 10/16 • 553 LV, MoE ±4.3%

“The American Promise”

Barack Obama, from his speech accepting the Democratic nomination for President of the United States of America, in Denver, 28 August 2008:
Instead, it is that American spirit — that American promise — that pushes us forward even when the path is uncertain; that binds us together in spite of our differences; that makes us fix [...]

Thanks, Washington

After more than $700 billion in taxpayer-subsidised bailouts for irresponsible corporations, and after our government has absorbed massive private debt into the already-enormous public debt, our American economy is still finding a way to blow itself up.
The Dow continues to fall by triple digits every day.  Today, it closed at 8,579.  One year ago today [...]

Republicans tanking on the national front

It seems like every poll that comes out is good news for Senator Obama or Democratic Senatorial candidates. Obama is shoring up leads all over the country. Respected projections like FiveThirtyEight’s have Obama taking in excess of 330 electoral votes. McCain is definitely on the defense, pulling out of states like Michigan [...]

The Florida African American Student Association and the Pensacola Junior College Students for Obama will host a “watch event” for the Vice Presidential debate tomorrow evening.  It will be held in the Hagler Auditorium (Building 2), at PJC’s main campus.  The debate, of course, begins at 8:00 PM.
The same organisations hosted a similar event for [...]

Quinnipac has Obama leading in Florida

Quinnipac has polling out today reflecting a pre-debate sample and a post-debate sample.  Both samples have Obama leading in Florida, going from +6 before the debate to +8 after.
Now, Quinnipac is one of my favourite polling outfits, because of their methodology and the detail into which their polls delve, but I think this is being [...]

Drill, Baby, Drill?

Every few years, our nation engages in a debate about energy. This is typically fueled (pun intended) by high gas prices as a result of dwindling supplies of oil.
To their credit, both McCain and Obama are talking about energy, but before I give you my take on their positions, let’s discuss some facts to put [...]

Colorado polling

This is a slow news week, politically, both locally and nationally. As we creep up to the first presidential debate Friday night, I want to highlight some polls from yesterday and today. Colorado is as close as it gets, and it’s a vital battleground. If Obama doesn’t win Virginia (although polling is looking good [...]

In Depth: 9/14 PPP poll of Virginia

Ahead of tomorrow’s weekly presidential race prediction, I wanted to highlight a recent poll out of Virginia. The poll was commissioned by Public Policy Polling (PPP), which is a Democratic-affiliated polling operation, and the poll only has Obama up by 2, within the margin of error, so take this all with a grain of [...]

America’s Lazy Media

During the Republican Convention, we heard one speaker after the next, slam the media with great fervor. It was almost like they were all singing off of the same sheet of music. And you know what, they were right!
I can barely stand to turn on the news today. Why? The only thing that any of [...]

Saturday’s John Lewis speech on video

The excellent Pensacola Beach Blog has pointed out that someone was kind enough to videotape Congressman John Lewis’ speech at the grand opening of the Obama campaign’s Pensacola headquarters this past Saturday.
The overwhelming turnout required the use of two buildings to hold everyone that showed up, and Congressman Lewis was kind enough to deliver his [...]

Huge crowd for Obama event yesterday

Turnout for yesterday’s grand opening of the Obama campaign’s Pensacola office was much greater than expected. Obama campaign staff reports 705 people in attendance. “Sarah Who?”

I must admit, considering what a political junkie as I am, I remember asking “Sarah who?” when McCain chose his #2 last week. Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled with the choice. It completely erodes the McCain team’s argument that Obama lacks experience. So what about Sarah Palin’s experience? She was Governor of one [...]

On Rudy Giuliani’s speech last night

OK, convention speeches are supposed to be overblown, and fantastic, but come on. Rudy Giuliani just started making stuff up, last night:
He (Obama) immersed himself in Chicago machine politics.
What the hell? No, he didn’t, and Giuliani didn’t and can’t offer up anything to back that ridiculous claim.
John McCain will lower taxes so our [...]

The GOP wants to make this election a joke

While the Obama campaign has tried to focus on real issues that affect us all — the economy, healthcare, the war — the McCain campaign wants to obscure the issues. They want to take this election as low as possible. They want to make this election not about issues or even anything real, [...]

MOBY on a roll

The PNJ’s Mark O’Brien is on a roll lately with his weird attack blogs.  Forget O’Brien’s party affiliation — he’s apparently just pro-incumbent, as in the past few weeks he’s written pieces maligning challengers to City incumbents Mike Wiggins, Jewel Cannada-Wynn, and Marty Donovan.
And then, sometimes, the wit that makes O’Brien occasionally entertaining to read [...]

Use your brain, John McCain

Sarah Palin for VP?
What is John McCain thinking?
Sarah Palin is virtually unknown outside of Alaska and political circles. She gets McCain nothing on the electoral map. Nothing, nada, zero, zip — except Alaska, of course, which he’d win without her. She doesn’t have any economic, foreign policy, or legislative credentials. Hell, [...]

In-depth race analyses

In the coming weeks and months, as races begin to shape up, I will be breaking down each and every race and referendum that will appear on ballots this fall.

My view on the Florida Democratic presidential primary

A lot of Democrats in Florida are irritated, to say the least, that the Democratic Party doesn’t want to count the results of Florida’s Democratic presidential primary, held this past January. Some are even planning a trip to Washington, D. C., to air their grievances.
Well, I don’t think our votes should count.
And I feel [...]
