What do these acronyms mean?
If you’re a new reader, you might be wondering what all of the acronyms used by Progressive Pensacola mean. Here, we try to present a list of commonly used acronyms and their meanings:
- BOCC – Board of County Commissioners. Also called the Escambia County Commission. This refers to the five-member elected board which serves as the legislative body for the unincorporated areas of Escambia County. You’ll sometimes see this acronym combined with a number, such as BOCC-3, which we use to refer to a specific district seat, i.e. Marie Young is the Commissioner for the BOCC-3 seat.
- CFO – Chief Financial Officer, a cabinet position in the Florida state government. See Wikipedia.
- CMP – The Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park, a large project to construct a minor league baseball stadium and other commercial and public developments, controversially funded with $40 million+ in public funds.
- CMPA – Community Maritime Park Associates, the quasi-governmental board of trustees which oversees the proposed Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park project.
- CRA – Community Redevelopment Agency, a quasi-governmental agency of the City of Pensacola, tasked with guiding the redevelopment of an area of downtown bordered on the north by Cervantes Street, on the west by A Street, on the east by 17th Avenue, and on the south by Pensacola Bay.
- CRC – Charter Review Commission.
- DEM – Democrat.
- DIB – Downtown Improvement Board, a quasi-governmental agency tasked with developing and marketing the core areas of downtown Pensacola.
- ECSB – Escambia County School Board, the five-member elected board which serves as the legislative body for the Escambia County School District, which operates K-12 public schools throughout all of Escambia County, including incorporated areas.
- ECSO – Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the law enforcement agency for Escambia County.
- ECUA – Emerald Coast Utilities Authority, the agency responsible for water and sewage services throughout Escambia County, including the incorporated areas, as well as the garbage and sanitation services for the unincorporated areas of Escambia County. The agency is administered by a five-member elected board; you’ll sometimes see this acronym combined with a number, such as ECUA-5, which we use to refer to a specific ECUA district seat, i.e. Larry Walker is the board member for ECUA-5.
- Escambia DEC – The Escambia County Democratic Executive Committee, the embodiment of the Democratic Party in Escambia County.
- Escambia REC – The Escambia County Republican Executive Committee, the embodiment of the Republican Party in Escambia County.
- ESP – Energy Services of Pensacola, the gas utility owned and operated by the City of Pensacola.
- FDP – Florida Democratic Party.
- FL-01 – The First congressional district of Florida, the six-county district in the Florida Panhandle which elects a representative to the U. S. Congress.
- FLH – The Florida House of Representatives, the lower house of the Florida Legislature. You’ll usually see this acronym combined with a number, such as FLH-03, which we use to refer to a specific Florida House district, i.e. Clay Ford is the state representative for FLH-03.
- FLSen – The Florida Senate, the upper house of the Florida Legislature. You’ll usually see this acronym combined with a number, such as FLSen-02, which we use to refer to a specific Florida Senate district, i.e. Don Gaetz is the state senator for FLSen-04.
- F.S. – Florida Statutes.
- (i) – Denotes an incumbent.
- LWV – League of Women Voters.
- NHPA – North Hill Preservation Association.
- NPA – No party affiliation.
- PCC – The Pensacola City Council, the ten-member elected board which serves as the legislative body for the City of Pensacola. You’ll often see this acronym combined with a number, such as PCC-2, which we use to refer to a specific City Council district seat, i.e. Sam Hall is the Council member for the City of Pensacola’s District 2.
- PFD – The Pensacola Fire Department, the fire protection agency for the City of Pensacola.
- PNJ – The Pensacola News Journal.
- PPD – The Pensacola Police Department, the law enforcement agency for the City of Pensacola.
- PYP – Pensacola Young Professionals.
- Rep. – Short for Representative and refers to either a Congressman or State Representative, depending on the context.
- REP – Republican.
- RPOF – Republican Party of Florida.
