Video: Council versus BP Barbie

Below is is video of Pensacola City Council members dressing down “BP Barbie” Liz Castro, who appeared before the Council Monday with no answers to questions about BP’s new Bayou Chico operations. For more on that meeting, see our story, “‘BP Barbie’ clueless before Council.”

WEAR reported last night that Ms. Castro “has been relieved of her duties as BP’s spokesperson for the Pensacola area.”

Check back for more video throughout the day. We’ll start with Councilman Sam Hall:

Now Councilwoman Diane Mack, who calls BP’s presentation “insulting”:

Councilwoman Maren DeWeese asks Ms. Castro a basic question but (you guessed it) doesn’t get an answer:

And finally, Councilman Larry B. Johnson tells Ms. Castro and BP to take their operation somewhere else:

Wow, she couldn’t even look Councilman Hall in the eyes when she was answering his questions. It’s obvious that BP just thinks this is one big joke.

  • What is their point? What other site should BP use? Should they not set up a site?

  • Looks like a Saturday night live spoof.

Uh I’m gonna hafta get back with you on that one.

Uh I’m gonna hafta get back with you on that one, too.

Uh I’m gonna hafta get back with you on that one, as well.

Uh I’m gonna hafta get back with you on that one, in addition to the others.

  • Fairplay

You tell us what the point was.

BP was already setting up the staging area. They didn’t need council permission. They leased the property and began setup.

So what was the point of this excercise with Liz?

  • Guess she was easy pickins

  • She was easy pickings.
She was easy pickings because she had not developed a deep understanding of the process of key operations in our community

She was easy because she reported a title that is hard to fathom or didn’t respond when the assertion was made that the title didn’t match the job that she was being doing,

She was easy pickings because we are on the eve of an election and _the council wants to make sure all of us know how much they care_.

A fine representation of the comedic/tragic tradition in real life, because a public council is a type of theatrical tradition, a soberingly real one.

  • easy pickings:

    easy mark
    Part of Speech: noun
    Definition: easy victim
Synonyms: chump, cinch, doormat, easy pickings, easy touch, fall guy, jay, mark, mug, patsy, pigeon, prize sap, pushover, scapegoat, sitting duck, soft touch, sucker, trusting soul

So she was the prize sap for BP. Her job was to go in and read a power point presentation to the council, be unable to answer ANY questions and pretend that BP was asking permission to do something that they were already doing.

    Got it.

Like reports from BP that there are thousands of boats cleaning up, but yet today on CNN the reporters didn’t see a single boat in a 20 mile span. The oil was thick. They showed a dead eel and a shark struggling, but no clean up boats in sight. When asked what that meant, the reporter stated that the claim of thousands of boats in cleanup is just simply untrue.

Larry Johnson asked why they were not using huge tankers to clean up, but looks like BP wants to save those for transporting good oil.

Again, all in the hands of BP and from what I’ve seen, I don’t think it should be.

It took 5 weeks to mix mud or were they siphoning off enough oil to make it worth the delay ?

  • I think you got…the amount of water/oil scum they were able to slurp up was enough to pay off Haliburton

  • So why all the grandstanding? What is the point of asking or saying anything to BP Barbie? Oh, yeah. Election season.
