Jerralds “wouldn’t hesitate” to raise taxes
During yesterday’s City Council workshop on the Mercer Study, Councilman John Jerralds broached the often-taboo topic of tax increases, saying that an increase in ad valorem property taxes may be necessary to balance the budget and give City employees raises:
If we have to go back to increasing the millage [rate], I wouldn’t hesitate to do it.
The City’s millage rate currently stands at 4.5395 mills. It was last reduced in 2008, after passage of Amendment 1, from the previous rate of 4.598 mills. Amendment 1, combined with depressed property values, has resulted in substantial revenue reductions for governments across the State of Florida, the City of Pensacola included.

Who on earth is voting to re-elect this idiot year after year?
Hopefully, there will be a young professional from this district to run for council to oust this guy.
James,
You going to see more and more of this. We have to pay for the Ball Park, the Mayor and all on the council as well.
Where do you think the fund fairy dollars are going to come from.
You say a YOUNG professional. How about we leave it at professional.
The first and critical step … ALL CITY of PENSACOLA VOTERS MUST GET INVOLVED!!!!!
The millage rate has not been raised in close to 20 years. It seems city residents want to have the benefits of living in the city and not have to pay for decent police and fire protection and other city services. Pay up or move out.
Travis must be a city employee. If so and we follow his suggestion and all move out he would be unemployed. Maybe not such a bad idea.
Feel free to rent the U-Haul, it won’t affect me in the least.
Is this a joke?
Not raised the millage but the assessment values have jumped up every year. I saw no sign of a real estate devaluation on the tax bill.
Anyone that has homesteaded property their assessed value will go up 3% a year, thus taxes will go up.
City employees that live in the city will need an increase. Jerralds is jacking up the taxes.
The city employees that chose Santa Rosa County or the County already have their increase. They saved over 4 mills and a stormwater tax by NOT living in the city.
Now just tell us Mr. Jerralds what world you are in becausemost folks think we are in a recession trying to hold on to a job not demanding increases now.
I am interested in knowing if this is an isolated City Council person’s view. What do the others believe?
Thank you Nancy. The amount collected continues to escalate year after year, even though we couldn’t find a buyer for our homes at the current ‘appraised’ value if we wanted one. The answer is not to raise taxes but to cut waste. Why are we giving so much money to the Chamber of Commerce each year? Why are we building a minor league baseball stadium when UWF already has one that is suitable for this use? Waste. Cut out the waste and we won’t have a budget problem, Jerralds.
Pensacola has champagne tastes on a beer budget.
Anbody got a copy of Emerson’s evaluation for that fat check she keeps collecting with no results?
Where are the new jobs?
How much has it costs us to pay the chamber to spread propaganda ?
Folks, you see that taxes are going up everywhere you look. The federal government is spending a lot of money to keep America strong. The government can spend your hard earned money in an efficient manner in order to make your life better. Don’t try to say that you are smarter than some government bureaucrats. You all run along now and make some more money for the local, state, and federal coffers. Jerralds is down for the struggle. – Barack
Jerralds must be a belliever, Barack, the taxpayers pockets will never run dry as long as the politicians want to spend.
John Jerralds;
Got anything else the city owns that you can give away for one dollar to rev up Pensacola’s economy? It’s been great for the taxpayers so far. Just look how many tax dollars the CMPA has spent so far.
