Proposed City charter passes 55-45

The proposed new charter for the City of Pensacola was approved tonight with 55% of the vote. The final tally:

  • YES: 7,762 (55.2%)
  • NO: 6,308 (44.8%)

The new charter promises sweeping, fundamental changes in the City’s governmental structure. Beginning in November 2010, the City Council’s unitary authority will be split among an executive mayor and a legislative City Council. The City’s day-to-day operations and leadership will be handled by an elected executive mayor.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The new charter adds provisions for citizen initiative, independent redistricting, regular charter review, and more. The way in which City officials are hired or appointed will change. Terms of elected officials will increase from two to four years, and term limits will be instituted.

Over the coming days and weeks, Progressive Pensacola will detail many of these changes and analyse what the mean for our City.

UPDATE: The News Journal has the vote breakdown by precinct.
