Updated voter demographics, 11.23.09

Below is the latest demographic analysis of voters who have returned their ballots in the City’s charter referendum. The data is current as of 12,144 votes (roughly 32% turnout).

The latest data shows little to no change in previously identified trends. Most voters thus far are white and age 50 or older, although the latest data shows a drop in turnout of voters 65+ and older. That drop is countered by increased turnout in the 50-64 demographic and a slight uptick in turnout among voters aged 25-34. Although voters 50 and older make up around 50% of the City electorate, they’ve accounted for about 75% of votes cast so far. Voters under age 35 make up about 25% of the electorate, but account for less than 10% of votes cast.

African-American turnout is up down slightly, while turnout among voters of other ethnic groups is up.

To view previous data, check out November 19, November 17, November 16, and November 12.

To be clear, returned ballots remained sealed until after 7:00 PM on November 24. The Supervisor of Elections, however, does record who has voted, and that list is public information. Demographic data supplied by voters on their voter registration form is also public information. This data can be combined by anyone to create a demographic analysis of those who have voted.

If you haven’t voted yet, please do. Ballots are due by 7:00 PM tomorrow; you can return your ballot by hand to the Supervisor of Elections’ office at 213 South Palafox Street.
