Official charter vote tonight

At its meeting tonight, the Pensacola City Council will officially vote on the Charter Review Commission’s proposed charter. Council previously approved the charter in a special Committee of the Whole session held September 2, making slight changes and voting to forward the document to a public referendum.

If approved tonight, the City Attorney will begin drafting ballot language. That language would have to be approved via ordinance, which would happen at Council meetings on September 24 and October 8. If there are no significant delays, a referendum could be held in November or early December.

Attached below is the final version of the proposed Charter, released by the City Attorney yesterday.

Time to start educating the public about what a bad idea this is. A strong mayor can meet individually with city council members & pressure them into supporting his agenda by threatening to veto things they want for their district. Everyone wants a strong mayor until the candidate you support loses & someone else is in office — for 4 long years. Those with money & power will see their mayor elected and the rest of us will suffer the consequences.

  • What a Guy — I agree! Isn’t it enough that one e-mail from Appleyard makes the mayor direct the city manager to take over community development & throw Thaddeus Cohen under the bus? Cohen is a great community development director who ruffled some feathers when he said “no” to those with money & power. If we had a strong mayor, Appleyard & others would pull the mayor’s strings, just like a puppet.

  • It would be hard for strong mayor to work with the Pensacola cast of characters.

    We’ve already seen the previews.
