Hope everyone is well and safe after a great Fourth of July. Our thanks to all those who worked hard to put on Fourth of July activities yesterday, particularly the excellent fireworks display.
A few items I wanted to highlight today:
Pensacola News Journal:
“Chamber salaries worth it?”
The PNJ‘s local government man Jamie Page reveals that three top Chamber of Commerce employees made more than $100,000 last year, with Chamber president Evon Emerson’s total compensation topping out at $193,331. The Chamber’s budget was 62% public funded last year.
Pensacola News Journal:
“Officer hailed as hero in fire”
Our thanks to Pensacola Police officer Greg Gordon for his heroic actions this past Friday. Patrolling in the area when a fire call went out, Officer Gordon responded to the fire, ran into the home, and carried its sole occupant to safety.
Pensacola News Journal:
“Tristan de who-a? Pensapedia it!”
The News Journal runs a feature on the Pensapedia project. Your correspondent is mentioned, as I am a chronic contributor to that project.
The Lunch Counter:
“Fair Tax Advocates at Tea Party”
Our friend Ross Calloway recounts yesterday’s gathering of crazy yahoos, conspiracy theorists, and a few reasonable conservatives at another “tea party” protest.

The article on Chamber salaries is very telling. I bet city council members regret approving a compensation/benefit survey that will compare city employee salaries with private as well as public sector employees. Bet they find out that the pay for city employees isn’t out of line at all & may be on the low end of the pay scale. Then what are they going to do?! They already don’t have what it takes to stand up to the unions. The data they get in October will just make it harder.
$193,000.+ salary for Chamber prez from a budget 62% public funded
public funds = free money and the sky is the limit!
this is prudent spending of public funds?

Today’s PNJ on the Lexington reunion in MOBILE
“The Pensacola Chamber’s reaction was in stark contrast to the reaction of the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau, he said.
“When the Mobile tourism agency somehow found out about the reunion, DiMonte received a package in the mail with information about the Port City’s hotels, restaurants, attractions and other amenities. The package included a letter from Mobile Mayor Sam Jones, who offered the city’s hospitality and even his personal phone number.
“Mobile marketed me,” DiMonte said. “They found out about the reunion and said they would do whatever they could to help us.”

a welcome letter from the Mayor!! The long arm structure of the Chamber-City relationship is a setup for failure. Left hand doesn’t care what the right hand is doing. The Chamber gets their money and high salaries regardless.
This city let the Lexington go to Texas because somebody influential in this struggling town thought it would compete with the Air museum.
It’s gone and so is the reunion- to Mobile.
