Round-up, 06.29.09

A few items I wanted to highlight today:

Mason-Dixon:
Crist 51, Rubio 23

A new Mason-Dixon poll has Florida Governor Charlie Crist leading challenger Marco Rubio for the Republican nomination in the 2010 U.S. Senate race. Big surprise.

Although Mr. Rubio did make small gains (he polled 19% last month), Governor Crist continues to crush him by more than a 2-1 margin.

Despite the fact that Florida is trending blue, Mr. Rubio has seemingly adopted the national GOP strategy of rejecting centrism in favour of radicalism, attempting to appeal to the more conservative fringe elements of his party.

Other coverage:

Pensacola News Journal:
“PJC to cut 25 jobs”

Pensacola Junior College has laid off its 25 custodians, who will be replaced by a private contractor.

Jamie Page’s Notebook:
“Council lists political goals”

The News Journal‘s Jamie Page collects the goals submitted by each Council member ahead of tomorrow’s “goal setting session.” Except for Ron Townsend’s — he had something better to do, we assume. P.C. Wu also apparently didn’t submit any goals.

NorthEscambia.com:
“UWF digging for the past in Molino”

A great article from the fine folks at NorthEscambia.com about some very interesting archaeological work which UWF is doing up in North County.

Pensacola News Journal:
“Public meetings this week”

The PNJ‘s round-up of governmental meetings this week.

Concerning Rubio, I have a couple videos here that show his radical fringe beliefs.

True statement that Rubio has a long way to go. That’s what everyone said about Obama early on. Now, if you want to talk about radical and fringe . . .

    • I’m actually hoping Rubio picks up steam. If he does, hopefully Charlie feels forced to move to the right also, which will alienate the moderate Dems and Independents in Charlie’s camp. Methinks that’s a recipe for a Dem victory.

      • If it happens that way, then it happens. I can accept a loss based on principles more than I can even tolerate one where a politician advances legislation that is antithetical to the party, distressing the economy, creating more debt for future generations, and all for a short-term gain. Democrats do that. Not Republicans. It is immoral that we should do this to future generations for crying out load.

Republicans lose national elections when they act like Crist or McCain. That is to say, when they abandon conservative principles. Eight of them voted for Cap and Trade, which is the largest money grab and money transfer out of the private sector in history, not to mention an economy killer. But that’s another subject. Legislation like THAT is not in the DNA of a Republican true to his principles, of a politician maybe, but stuff like that is just not in the platform. More government growth and control is antithetical to the republican party.

But to the point, I too would want Rubio to run, despite Crist’s fundraising power, because I believe Rubio will run as the conservative that I think he is and not the weasel that I think Crist is. And when Republicans run conservatives, they win. So if not this time, then next time.

The last election taught us this. You don’t increase the party by acting like the other party, but no democrat would oppose that idea as long as it was Republicans adopting their agenda. Notice that Democrats never take on Republican agenda items. Their leadership maintains control over their political future and doesn’t hesitate to remind them. Anyway, you increase the party by persuading those of the other party, and so-called moderates and independents, that your ideas will be better for the country, and why. McCain’s support of amnesty didn’t get him anywhere. Even the illegals could see his pandering. Besides, they know the Dems would give it to them if anybody could.

      • I was trying to understand why you referred to Rubio as ‘radical fringe’ and I came up with a theory. Because he is anything but radical or fringe.

But here’s where it starts to make sense. If you consider Arlen Specter to be a moderate republican, then that would necessarily push Rubio off the charts.

Under those conditions, yeah, he’s radical fringe. :)

So Wu and Townsend had no goals whatsoever to contribute???????

Perhaps it is time they both resign and stop wasting a council seat and collecting a paycheck for their arrogant laziness.

*Sorry posted this under 4th of July goings on although this action should bring fireworks for these two from the other council members.

    • Haha… I went ahead and deleted your duplicate comment on the Fourth of July post.

I assume Ron Townsend was just too busy, doing whatever it is he does when he skips out on Council meetings. He keeps very busy for a guy in his 70s! Unfortunately not with City business, though.

      Not sure about Wu.

Not sure about Wu either, but at least he has confirmed that he has no goals for this community.

    It shows.
