Meek gets off to a good start

Florida Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-Miami), who announced this morning he would run for Senate, is alright making some smart moves:

Kendrick Meek has brought in some top talent to his just-announced US Senate campaign: Steve Hildebrand, Barack Obama’s deputy national campaign manager (focused heavily on Miami-Dade in the final weeks), and the former political director of the DSCC.

This is a big boost right out of the gate to the Meek campaign.

What does the blogosphere think of Meek? From Swing State Project:

I’m no big fan of Kendrick Meek, in no small part thanks to his non-support of our trio of Democratic challengers in South Florida this past fall, but thankfully I doubt that he’ll have a clear primary field to himself.

From Progress Florida:

Before Meek was elected to Congress, he was one of the few Democrats who vocally stood up to Jeb Bush when it was in no way easy to do so. When Jeb tried to ram through his ‘One Florida’ initiative, essentially dismantling affirmative action programs in the state, Meek along with other legislators staged a sit-in in Jeb’s office…

As Jeb tried to chip away at public education through an unaccountable (and later unconstitutional) voucher program and rather authoritarian standards, Meek outflanked Jeb by placing the class-size amendment on Florida’s ballot, which passed in 2002 despite a huge misinformation campaign by Jeb and his minions.

From Daily Kos:

Meek should be a formidable candidate. He’s a young, talented and well-connected politician, and a formidable fundraiser. His entry, however, is unlikely to force any Republicans out of the race. The potential GOP field will probably feature the same cast of characters; Reps. Connie Mack and Adam Putnam, AG Bill McCollum, House Speaker Marco Rubio, and Senate President Jeff Atwater.
