Watch the Pelican drop to ring in 2009

As many of you know, Pensacola is dropping a pelican, Times Square style, to ring in the new year in downtown Pensacola.  I’m excited.  Thad Cohen and the CRA did an excellent job of putting the project together (and of getting sponsors to pay for a lot of stuff), and I applaud them for their [...]

On Hawkshaw East

From Rick’s Blog:
The Pensacola City Council has been notified that the developers of Hawkshaw East will not close on their purchase of the city property located adjacent Gulf Power’s headquarters on Bayfront Parkway.
Another downtown project cancelled before the first shovel went into the ground.  While I’m disappointed to see development stagnating, I personally was never [...]

Sansom lawyers up

The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that Florida House Speaker Ray Sansom has retained an attorney to defend him from anything that may rise from his ongoing scandal, including an official complaint that was filed yesterday with the Florida Commission on Ethics.  Coates specialises in ethics cases; he previously defended former Florida CFO Tom Gallagher [...]

Round-up, 12.29.08

A few miscellaneous things I want to highlight today:
Mark O’Brien: “Bar patrol, no daring, a safe bet”
The PNJ’s Mark O’Brien offers up some O’pinions, at least one of which is right on the money:
Decades ago, leaders nixed plans to extend North Ninth Avenue through vacant land to Interstate 10. Now, homes cover the property and [...]

College gave Sansom shopping lists

Alex Leary of the St. Petersburg Times reports that Northwest Florida State College president Bob Richburg sent several “shopping lists” of desired funding to State Rep. Ray Sansom (R-Destin), who, as we all know, is now both the Speaker of the Florida House, and an employee of the college, at the same time.
The emails are remarkable. [...]

Diversity of the new Council

The PNJ ran a nice feel-good piece today about how the two mothers of young children elected to the Pensacola City Council (those two being Maren DeWeese and Megan Benson Pratt) bright “new insight” to the Council.  I hope they’re right.  I hope that being the mother of young children would spur one to think [...]

O’Brien on term limits

Mark O’Brien has two noteworthy pieces in today’s PNJ.  The first is a puff piece about all the good things that outgoing Citu Council members have done; in the second, he offers his thoughts on a variety of local government issues in his traditional “O’pinions” style.
He makes a comment in the second piece that I [...]

Florida now has 100,000 prison inmates

As of this morning, there are 100,000 persons incarcerated in the Florida state prison system.
Expect that number to continue to rise steadily.
In last year’s state budget, the Florida Legislature cut education funding by $332 million while managing to find $309 million for prison construction.  That’s the idea.  As our young people graduate from an underfunded, [...]

Sansom’s college wants more money

Northwest Florida State College, the institution for which Florida House Speaker Ray Sansom nabbed $35 million in the last two years, and which rewarded him for his efforts with a six-figure administration job, is back at the table asking for seconds.
The college wants $13.2 million this time around.  The Florida Department of Education is recommending [...]
