Endorsement: Robbie Andrews
Progressive Pensacola endorses Robbie Andrews for Pensacola City Council, District 7.
We’ll be frank — we don’t agree with Andrews on a number of key issues, particularly the CMP issue. Andrews seems to favour abolishing the project and trying to attract a cruise ship or amusement park. Apparently he has been drinking some of the Saccomanno kool-aid.
That said, District 7 needs a new voice, and we feel that Andrews is best suited for the job.
Ronald Townsend, in spite of whatever good intentions he may have gone into office with, has become entrenched. He is part of the problem, and not part of the solution. Anyone who doubts that needs only hear what he recently said to Councilman Sam Hall. Townsend was upset that Hall publicly supported his opponent Andrews, and asked Hall about his lack of support. When Hall responded that Townsend had never supported him on Council, Townsend replied: “It’s not that I don’t support you, Sam; it’s that you came in here gangbusters and you had to be taught a lesson.”
Andrews’ priorities seem to be in the right place. He is concerned with the way current Council has handled the loss of tax revenue and the impact that has had on vital services like police and fire protection. Recognising the void of leadership in City government, Andrews backs a strong mayor system. We support Robbie Andrews as the new voice for District 7.

Derek, thank you for endorsing Robbie. He will be a fine representative for Pensacola’s west side.
But I want to be clear on a few things regarding Ron. I am not and never have been anti-Ron Townsend. Ron is a wonderful human being, a credit to our community.
But as you pointed out he seems to have become a creature of incumbency and the “safe way”.
Our form of government in the United States works best with antagonism….antagonism over issues, not personality. Ron appears to not buy into that.
But it’s hard to blame him. The pressure to go-along-to-get-along is great. I get it at least weekly and sometimes daily.
I support Robbie not because he and I are lock-step on issues but because I am hoping he will bring independent thought to Council. If he does, then my ideas will get a fair hearing.
By all means
make sure “Mr. Hall’s ideas” get a fair hearing!
@More homework needed: It’s bigger picture he’s talking about, I think. I don’t always agree with Sam, but he has made pushes for good reforms that have been ignored by other members of Council because of their entrenched, closeminded positions.
the original request was simply for a MLK street exit sign on I-110 .
